President John Dramani Mahama has directed tenants across Ghana to report landlords who demand rent advances beyond what is permitted by law.

The President’s directive is aimed at enforcing provisions under the Rent Act 1963 (Act 220), which limits the amount of advance rent landlords can legally request from tenants. The move comes amid growing complaints about landlords charging multiple years of rent upfront, placing a heavy financial burden on renters.

According to President Mahama, tenants should not hesitate to report such practices to the appropriate authorities, including the Rent Control Department, to ensure compliance and protect their rights.

He emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing housing challenges and ensuring fairness in the rental market. The directive is also expected to strengthen enforcement efforts and discourage exploitative practices within the sector.

Many tenants have welcomed the call, describing it as a necessary step toward easing the pressure of accommodation costs, especially in major cities where rent demands continue to rise.
