The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a massive consignment of 146.9 million Tramadol tablets at the Tema Port, in what authorities describe as one of the largest pharmaceutical seizures in recent times.

According to officials, the shipment was flagged during routine inspection processes at the port. Preliminary findings indicate that the consignment was either undeclared or improperly documented, prompting further investigation by customs officers.

Tramadol, a prescription painkiller, has become a growing concern across West Africa due to its abuse, particularly among the youth. Security agencies have repeatedly warned about the health risks and social consequences associated with the misuse of the drug.

The GRA stated that investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the shipment and determine whether additional accomplices may be involved. The intercepted tablets are expected to undergo further regulatory review before any final action is taken.

Authorities say the seizure underscores their continued commitment to tightening port security and preventing the influx of illicit or controlled substances into the country.
