A total of 328 residents in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region have tested positive for elephantiasis following a recent health screening exercise conducted by municipal health authorities.

The screening, which formed part of efforts to monitor and control neglected tropical diseases in the area, revealed a significant number of infections, raising concern among health officials.

Elephantiasis, medically known as lymphatic filariasis, is a parasitic disease transmitted through mosquito bites. The condition can cause abnormal swelling of body parts, particularly the legs, arms, and genitals, if left untreated. It can also lead to long-term disability and social stigma.

Health authorities in the municipality have assured residents that measures are being intensified to manage the situation. These include treatment for affected persons, public education on prevention, and strategies to reduce mosquito breeding in communities.

Officials are also encouraging residents to participate fully in mass drug administration exercises and to adopt preventive measures such as sleeping under insecticide-treated nets.

The Municipal Health Directorate says it remains committed to working closely with community leaders and stakeholders to curb the spread of the disease and improve public health outcomes in the area.
