Police Gun Down Three Suspected Robbers in Deadly Shootout
Three suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a fierce exchange of gunfire with police during an intelligence-led operation in the Ashanti Region.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out after officers received credible information about a planned highway robbery along the Anwiankwanta, Jacobu stretch. Acting on the tip-off, a police patrol team moved into the area to intercept the suspects, who were hiding in a nearby bush.
Upon sighting the police, the suspects allegedly opened fire in an attempt to escape, prompting officers to return fire. In the ensuing shootout, three men sustained gunshot wounds.
The injured suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital for medical attention but were pronounced dead on arrival.
A search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of firearms and ammunition believed to have been used by the suspects. Police sources say the deceased were part of a notorious robbery gang linked to several violent attacks and at least one murder in parts of the Ashanti Region.
Two other suspected accomplices are said to have fled during the confrontation, and a manhunt has been launched to track them down.
Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and have urged residents to cooperate by volunteering information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.
