Ga Central MCE Warns PWDs Against Street Begging

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga Central, Emmanuel Nii Adotey Allotey, has cautioned persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality to stop begging on the streets and take advantage of government support programmes designed to improve their livelihoods.

Speaking during an engagement with disability groups, the MCE said street begging does not reflect the dignity and potential of persons with disabilities. He urged them to pursue productive ventures that can help them achieve financial independence.

Mr Allotey explained that the government, through the District Assemblies Common Fund, has set aside five per cent to support PWDs. The funds are used to provide tools and equipment to help beneficiaries start or expand small businesses.

As part of the support, items such as refrigerators, motorbikes and corn milling machines were distributed to selected beneficiaries based on their chosen trades.

The MCE emphasised that beneficiaries who receive such support must utilise the items effectively, noting that the assembly will not tolerate situations where supported individuals continue to beg on the streets.

He encouraged PWDs to see the initiative as an opportunity to improve their standard of living and contribute meaningfully to society.
