GPRTU Task Force Arrests 15 Drivers in Ablekuma for Alleged Overcharging
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has arrested 15 commercial drivers in Ablekuma, Accra, for allegedly charging commuters multiple fares. The action is part of the union’s ongoing effort to enforce fare regulations and maintain order on the roads.
Speaking on the operation, GPRTU National Guard Commander Derumond Ekow Gaise explained that the task force aims to curb indiscipline among drivers and ensure that passengers are not unfairly overcharged. The crackdown also targets operators who allegedly engage in “short short” trips—dropping passengers at multiple stops for additional fares instead of completing a full route.
Some of the drivers detained, however, claimed they only charged standard fares and described the arrests as unwarranted. One driver noted that he was operating on his usual route from Odorkor to Pokuase and denied any wrongdoing.
The GPRTU defended the arrests, stating that the drivers will be handed over to the police to face the law and serve as a warning to others. The union also confirmed that such enforcement operations will continue across the city to ensure drivers adhere to regulations and protect commuters’ rights.
