Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician and choir director Yaw Sarpong has passed away at the age of 66, marking the end of an era in Ghana’s gospel music industry.

The veteran musician, who was the founder and leader of the celebrated Asomafo (Asomafuo) Gospel Band, died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical attention. His death was confirmed by close associates of the family.

Yaw Sarpong was widely respected for his decades-long contribution to gospel music, particularly for blending traditional Ghanaian rhythms with contemporary Christian themes. Through the Asomafo Band, he nurtured several gospel artists and produced numerous inspirational songs that became staples in churches across the country.
