ECG Not for Sale, Says Energy Ministry Amid PSP Plans
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has rejected the claim that the Electricity Company of Ghana is being sold.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has dismissed claims that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is being sold, insisting that the government’s planned Private Sector Participation (PSP) initiative does not amount to a divestiture.
In a statement responding to concerns raised by the Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU), the Ministry explained that the PSP framework, approved by Cabinet earlier this year, is aimed at improving ECG’s efficiency and financial performance rather than transferring ownership.
According to the Ministry, the programme is designed to enhance revenue mobilisation, strengthen billing systems, improve service delivery and reduce technical and commercial losses within the power distributor. It stressed that the government will retain ownership of ECG, while private sector involvement will be limited to specific operational areas under carefully structured arrangements.
The Ministry further clarified that the ongoing process to appoint a transaction adviser is a routine technical step required to guide the reforms and should not be interpreted as a move to sell the company.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the Energy Ministry assured PUWU that workers’ interests will be protected and pledged continued engagement with the union as discussions on the reform agenda progress.
