The Government of Ghana has officially declared Wednesdays as a national day for wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to promote the country’s cultural heritage and strengthen the creative economy.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and dated February 10, 2026, the government encouraged all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana both home and abroad, to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu in its various forms, designs, and expressions.

According to the Ministry, the initiative is aimed at preserving, promoting, and celebrating Ghana’s rich cultural identity while projecting the country’s heritage proudly to the global community. The statement emphasized that the wearing of Fugu should be complemented with its distinctive and beautiful accessories to fully showcase its cultural value.

Beyond cultural pride, the government believes the initiative will generate significant social and economic benefits. It is expected to empower local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the textile and fashion value chain, while creating expanded business, employment, and commercial opportunities nationwide.

The Ministry further noted that the collective embrace of Fugu has the potential to strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.

The declaration was signed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using culture as a tool for national development.
